Aston Martin Lagonda is the world’s only independent luxury car group with more than 100 years of design and automotive excellence across two brands. They strive to be the great British car company that creates the most beautiful and accomplished automotive art in the world.

Our design team helped Aston Martin to research, design and develop a safety component for the DB11 and DBS grand tourers. This device robustly positions the clamshell hood during normal use, but fractures and collapses if there is an impact, allowing the four bar link hinges and gas struts to descend into the engine bay and potentially reduce injury. These parts are injection moulded from high-end engineering polymers to maintain performance across the possible range of engine bay temperatures worldwide.

Mechanical Engineers worked closely with polymer manufacturers to define suitable materials, the design was refined with FEA simulation, prototypes were machined from solid billets and systematic bench testing was undertaken at a wide range of temperatures.

We also assisted with technical and intellectual property documents and drawings to apply for a patent that was granted in 2017.
